Hogan Defeats Gawker Media: Wins $115 Million Suit

This is a blow to the journalism industry.

Period.

Gawker, an established part of the new media movement, exercised their first amendment right, but that wasn’t enough for the jury.

Hulk Hogan and won a $115 million dollar lawsuit against Gawker Media and founder Nick Denton over a published sex tape Hogan had with a friends wife.

Denton, the founder of Gawker Media, said in a statement that the company plans to appeal the decision.

Given key evidence and the most important witness were both improperly withheld from this jury, we all knew the appeals court will need to resolve the case. I want to thank our lawyers for their outstanding work and am confident that we would have prevailed at trial if we had been allowed to present the full case to the jury. That’s why we feel very positive about the appeal that we have already begun preparing, as we expect to win this case ultimately.

Check out Poynter’s coverage of the case for a better explanation and understanding of what it means to the world of journalism.

And because it’s the internet, and Hulk Hogan a public actor, performer and otherwise artists, who had sex with a friend’s wife, you can find the video on the Internet. (If you so desire.)

Glad the sex tape link doesn’t work. Gawnews has never promoted porn.
